little miss sunshine
但是看到别人讲,什么你的都是都是incremental,follow mainstream,has no inovative ideas。

Blink
http://www.gladwell.com/blink/
It talks about our unconcious decision making process. Somehow we have the ability to pick up, form an enormous amount of information, something that is essential to make the correct decision. In terms of sensor networks (ok, bear with me to talk about research in the personal blog), it is "compressed sensing" in the brain.
Interestingly, I picked up the book in a hurry from the airport bookstore, within a "blink". The decision was wise. I didn't have that much time to read more and had to decide to buy or not to buy (it is not a cheap book, $30 including tax, amazon charges only $12 though). It certainly made my second flight from chicago to long island much better than the first half (during which I was reviewing papers. how un-fun is that?!)
I didn't know much about psychology. This book illustrates by a few examples that psychology is such an interesting field. It is experimental, like physics and chemistry etc. The consequence is simply fascinating. Think about it. One can just observe a few seconds of conversation between a couple, and then predict with 90% correctness whether they will remain married after 15 years. There are only four major parameters, or 1 most important parameter -- contempt -- that decides whether two persons in a marriage will eventually split or not. To computer scientist, this notion isn't surprising. It is data-mining, or regression analysis to statistician. Psychologiests call it think slicing. The surprising thing is that our brain, somehow, within seconds or miliseconds, can finish the whole data mining process (or l_1 minimization in compressed sensing) and come up with a (often wise) decision.
To researchers, we often say that someone has the "sense". Maybe this is it! The sense comes from what we have learned in the past research experience and our appreciation of beauty, which somehow gets compressed and processed in a part of the brain so that when there is something similar, our sense catches it and bingo -- the click happens.
The first half of the book is very interesting. The last few chapters become boring. It is a book like "freakonomics". It brings you revolutional ideas, accompanied with funny examples.

zinedine zidane

A math puzzle
A puzzle I learned from Joel, originated from Peter.
Given a deck of card face down on the table, now I flip the card one by one. Each time you can bet any amount of money from you have in hand. Say if you bet $50 for the first one to be red. If it is red, then you get $50 extra. Or, you lose $50.
You are given $100 to start with. Now the question is what is the maximum amount of money you can always win.
The answer is about $900, with a cute argument.

High dimensions are tricky
I was bothered by a claim that seems to be trivial to argue. But I was stuck for a couple of days. It states:
If a d-dimensional convex body P does not contain a (k+1)-dimensional ball of radius r, then P can be enclosed in a k-dimensional flat with width (k+1)r.
This sounds intutively trivial. However when I try to write down the proof it is not easy. This also motivates me to read things about high dimensional space and polytopes etc. The thing is that high dimensional geometry is hard to visualize, and sometimes the results are counter-intuitive.
I have later been trying to use an old theorem called John's theorem to prove it. Though the theorem is very nice to know. My trials ended up in vain so far.
Anyway, here is the nice John's theorem (proved in 1938 or sth).
A convex body P in d-dimension contains an ellipsoid E such that E \subseteq P \subseteq dE, where dE is a factor d blowup of E. If P is symmetric, then P is enclosed in \sqrt{d}E. Both bounds are tight in the worst case. Examples are simplex and cube.

Funding is the most annoying thing in life
I said before that if my postdoc position at caltech was permanent, I would be happy to take it although it doesn't pay well.
My trip to IPSN was nice. It is just nice to see old friends and meet leo. I even think that it is really an appealling idea to go back to leo's group and re-do a Ph.D. Then Nikola started to joke about it and asked "how about you do one for me?"
Well, I wasn't really joking. I would be happy to just stay in a place surrounded with smart people and do things that I like. Read papers with cool results and learn stuff that I don't know before. That is inspiring and makes life worth living. Yes, learning something really cool is one of the major reasons that life is worth living. I would also be happy to talk to new students and advise them and so on. I don't hate teaching either.
The only thing that I hate about this job is the process of applying for grants and all the pressure and ugly things related to this. When everything boils down to money, it just turns ugly. Why can't someone give me a small piece of space, just one desk with a computer on top?! I don't ask for more. I will guarantee that I will work on good problems and produce something interesting.
So when sha called and asked whether I have dealt with the funding thing with Xxxx, I responded:
"No, and I don't want to think about it. And you ruined my day."
He asked again about whether I have talked to people in the university about green card application.
I answered: "You ruined my day twice."

Qing left for spain.
I am left with depression. The interaction with nasty people is not a fun thing. And unfortunately there are nasty people everywhere.
Not in the mood to say more.

Easter
I just happen to know that shops closed on easters.
We need to buy a semi-formal jacket for sha. Luckily we got one from Sears, the only one that is still open in that big mall.
And sometimes I don't fully understand holidays in some religon that you can not eat. I guess ait is difficult for chinese to imagine that. We celebrate every holiday by eating, not by starving.

很可悲的事实,女孩从小就被灌输这种想法,science is not your thing。
